On Wednesday, May 15, the Mira Costa surf team competed for All-Star Bay League Championships in their final competition of the season. They competed at home on 26th Street in Manhattan Beach. Costa entered: senior Alex Fry, senior Zach Rosenberg, sophomore Joey Samuelian, senior Chad Parks, sophomore Daniel Boos, and junior Shane Moseley.
“The energy was up and really positive, we went into the competition united and hopeful,” said senior Rosenberg
The Mustangs’ top riders came out strong in the beginning of the first round with aggressive paddle battles for set waves and critical cutbacks.
“On the boys side Shane Moseley squeaked through his wave-starved heat to take 3rd. Chad, Daniel, and Joey took 2nd in their heats. Zach and Alex took first in their heats moving everyone along to round 2,” said Coach Geller .
Rosenberg, Boos, and Parks paddled out in round 2, heat 1 with Rosenberg taking first in the heat and advancing straight to the final. Boos took 3rd place with a slot to semi-final, leaving Parks placed out in 4th.
“After getting a set wave to start off my heat, that had good shoulder, it boosted my adrenaline,” said Rosenberg, “To then backing it up [going into semi-finals] feeling confident once my heat was over.”
Soon after the second heat, Samuelian and Fry paddled out. Samuelian took the lead, but ended up in 2nd, placing him in the semi-final while Fry got first place, advancing straight to the finals.
“The current was very strong during our heat,” said Fry. “Pushing the other competitors and myself all the way down, out of the contest zone forcing us to get out [of the water] and run back down the beach to get back in the heat area.”
In the last heat of round 2, Moseley paddled out and got one solid wave, but with the current pushing him down the beach was unable to get enough sets, making him finish 5th.
“With Zach and Alex straight to final[s] for winning, Joey and Daniel were relegated to the reparcharge,” Coach Geller said. “Long lulls and lots of closeouts made the reparcharge really tricky with both Daniel and Joey right in it the whole way, but both were unable to get that backup needed and ended up 6th and 5th.”
In the end, Mira Costa boys fell short in wave scoring to North Torrance senior, Parker Browning. Rosenberg and Fry placed second and third out of 36 competitors.
“I was pleased with the outcome, but if the current had been less strong in the final I would have gotten to catch a backup wave. Next time I’ll predict the conditions better, for sure,” senior captain, Alex Fry said.
Despite the end of the school year coming up, there is still one, last competition of the year. Nationals on June 15 and 16 in Salt Creek, Dana Point where Rosenberg, Fry, Parks, Boos, Samuelian, and several others will compete for the title of National Champions.
“Our boys were by no means out surfed. Parker just landed one of the half dozen air reverses he threw and was rewarded with a 9,” explained Geller. “Costa managed to put multiple surfers into every boys and girls final and won 3 of those 4. A fantastic end to a very long, difficult year.

Zach Rosenburg
said “The competitive aspect of surf competitions is not that crazed to me. Yes, I get nervous or you could say I get butterflies and I do get upset if I do bad in a heat or don’t go through because the sport of surfing means a lot to me. I train very hard because I want to get better and being out in the water just makes me so happy. I’m so fortunate and lucky that I’m able to have the advantages to compete in a sport like surfing, living so close to the ocean. And winning in surfing makes me feel good but that’s not surfing to me. Surfing is my outlet and escape from society, to go out with friends and family to have a good time in the water. That may sound very corny but that’s just the best way to put it.”
